Our
Projects
AC Ed Equity is focused on changing inequitable practices and nurturing growth throughout our communities. We aim to lead with action. The belief that every child can succeed and should receive the opportunities to do so is central to the mission of the collaborative.
Change Management and Support
Real change cannot occur within the confines of an inequitable system. School communities must be ready to engage in courageous conversations, question norms, and build strong coalitions in order to effect lasting change. Our expertise in gap analysis helps groups see where their efforts can make the most difference for children in their community.
We cultivate relationships with dozens of community organizations and rely on a collaborative approach to decision-making that recognizes the cultural capital that already exists. Contact us for support in developing a plan for change that is focused, science-based, and empathetic to the voices of all stakeholders.

Classroom Resources
We provide high-quality books and materials with diverse perspectives to teachers and classrooms in Atlantic County. Discounts through our partners at First Book allow us to purchase new books to distribute in classrooms from PreK through high school. Some of our projects include a table at the Atlantic City Family Conference that invited parents and grandparents to choose new books to bring home to their families; an Instagram teacher book giveaway of 25 copies of Stamped by Jason Reynolds and Ibram X. Kendi; and books for each 8th grade graduate from a school in Atlantic City. Last year we gifted over 2,200 new, diverse books (retail value over $19,000!) directly to children in Atlantic County. Visit our Instagram page for profiles on diverse books and to enter our giveaway contests.

Supporting Prospective and Current Teachers
We partner with our local branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) to offer free tutoring on the Praxis Core to prospective teachers of color. Our tutors individualize instruction and practice based on your needs and provide one-on-one tutoring, either in-person or virtually. We will stick with you until you pass the test! Support from the AAUW New Jersey Charitable Trust enables us to reimburse clients for their test fees and provide our tutors with teaching materials. For more information, or to request a tutor, please email us at christine@acedequity.org.

Why is teacher diversity so important? First, representation matters. Students of color are more likely to graduate high school and attend college when they have at least one black teacher in elementary school. Teachers of color are more likely to teach in a culturally responsive way, which is good for all kids. Finally, students of teachers of color are less likely to be suspended, a practice that we know makes students 72% more likely to be incarcerated in the future.
We help teachers and administrators effectively implement the NJ Amistad requirements, facilitate restorative discipline practices, and incorporate student identity into the classroom environment.
